CROSSING TRAFFIC

Bad position
Cutting corners

Really poor driving and can be extremely dangerous doing so unless you can clearly see it is safe to carry out.

Good position
Perfect position when turning right and waiting for oncoming traffic

This would be the ideal stopping position whilst waiting for oncoming traffic to clear, giving you the opportunity to proceed.

When we turn right we must understand who has priority.

On the whole, oncoming traffic will always have priority.

This is unless priority is given to you.
This may be at a set of traffic lights with a filter system in place.
It may be that a traffic officer or policeman is giving you priority over oncoming vehicles.
But other than the above, priority is normally always given to oncoming vehicles.

Using the MSPSGL routine on approach to the turning will ensure most risk has been negated and you can then deal with the turn.
It may be that there is a filter lane that you need to pull into and wait either until it is safe to proceed or until priority is given to you by traffic signals.
Always ensure that you position yourself correctly in the road to show your intentions to other road users, and in a position that you can clearly see into the road you are turning into.

By looking into the road you are turning into it will ensure that you don't overshoot the turning or turn too early
Always be aware for pedestrians crossing the road you are turning into as well they Highway Code rules changed in January 2022 to give the most vulnerable road users priority.

Avoid cutting corners (unless it is safe to do so)
If at any stage you are unsure whether to go or not, it would be better to wait.
The ideal position for you to end up in if you have to wait for oncoming vehicles, is as close to the centre line as you can get without crossing it, and the bonnet of your vehicle being just behind the centre line of the road you are turning into.

If the road you are on is wide enough, it should then leave enough space for vehicles continuing ahead to pass on your left.
If you have to wait before turning into the road, ALWAYS re- check your blind spot and right door mirror to ensure no one is overtaking you prior to proceeding.

IF YOU DON'T KNOW----DON'T GO

A misjudged approach speed of an oncoming vehicle could end up very messy or even with fatalities.
