The flexible way to build your instructor skills
We would NEVER suggest anyone leave their current job to train as an instructor unless they have a good financial standing to see them over while they are training.
We appreciate the current cost of living crisis, which is why we have a pay as you go option in our training packages.
All our Pay as you go sessions are 2 hours long.
This allows for each subject to be dealt with in depth to build your knowledge and practice what you have learnt.
With PDI pay as you go, you'll have the flexibility to take sessions that work for you based on our availability,
and nurture your knowledge and skills session by session.
There's a lot to learn so it is worth considering how long you want to commit to your training sessions and over what time period.
It is worth remembering that if you are considering going for a trainee licence (pink licence), you will have to have completed 40 hours worth of training covering all the required aspects of the training curriculum required by the DVSA within the six month period prior to applying for your pink licence.
If you are not considering applying for a trainee licence then you have as long as you want to take your training.
Without a trainee licence, you may only offer driving lessons for free but this does not mean that you must apply for a trainee licence.
Do we consider a trainee licence a crucial aspect of becoming a driving instructor?
Well this will all depend on what previous experience you may have in teaching.
The part 3 instructor test which assess your ability to deliver a driving lesson that meets the requirements of the DVSA has on average a historical pass rate of between 35-39%.
This mainly comes down to instructors who are not fully prepared for this test.
Anyone can teach someone to drive if they have a knowledge of driving for themselves, but to becoming a driving instructor is a totally different thing.
A family member who teaches someone to drive can teach someone how to operate a car, but a driving instructor will have a totally different approach, so that they are not just teaching them how to operate a car, but to understand consequences of particular actions, rules of the road, up to date rules on the Highway Code, Priorities, How to read a road and the markings, understand the meaning behind road signs, Modern teaching techniques, Modern manoeuvres required for the driving test and other real life manoeuvres, have a much better understanding on how faults are made and methods to rectify these faults, Have the ability to intervene prior to a fault to avoid any safety critical incident happening, we have a calm and relaxed atmosphere in the car at all times, have the ability to break each individual subject into bite sized chunks so that the learner can process that information in a safe environment and with lots of practice in different situations that may not be used by a family member. Will have the ability to use questions to evoke awareness and to gain understanding and knowledge from the learner rather than just telling the learner.
They will also have the ability to push the skills of the learner far further than that of traditional home tuition.
If you have previous experience in teaching, you may find that a trainee licence is not for you and you can adapt into the role and skills of an instructor very quickly, if however, you have no previous experience, we would highly recommend that you apply for a trainee licence and gain the experience that is necessary to instruct properly.
There really is not substitute for doing the real thing, and the six month trainee licence is a great way of doing this.
If you are undergoing pay as you go sessions, you can stop taking them whenever you want, there is no obligation to continue with us and not tie in with us.
If however, you wish to apply for a trainee licence with us as your sponsor then you will need to sign a contract with us for this to happen.
Details of our sponsorship training can be found by clicking this link.
